How to use the YouTube Hashtag Generator
- Describe the video. Type the subject, such as "beginner guitar chords" or "budget travel Japan". Pick a niche if the match is not right.
- Review the top three. The first three tags are the ones to place first in the description. YouTube can show up to three hashtags by the title.
- Copy the description block. Copy the block: the top three on the first line, the rest after a blank line. Paste it at the start or end of your description.
- Check old descriptions. Paste an existing description into the checker to count its hashtags, spot repeats and see which three come first.
YouTube hashtag rules in plain words
What YouTube documents
The YouTube Help Center page "Use hashtags for YouTube videos", checked October 2026, says: hashtags have no spaces; up to three can show by the title; more than 60 on one video and all of them are ignored; and tags that are misleading, unrelated or excessive can lead to removal from uploads or search.
An older limit of 15 is still quoted around the web. The current page says 60, so this tool uses 60 for the hard rule and 15 only as the size of its suggested list.
How the block is built
The three title tags are your joined topic phrase, the most specific niche tag and one broad tag. The rest follow on a second line. If a tag does not describe the video, delete it: an unrelated hashtag is the kind YouTube says it may act on.
Frequently asked questions
How many hashtags can a YouTube video have?
Per the YouTube Help Center, if a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores every hashtag on it. The same page warns that adding too many tags can lead to a video being removed from search. This tool caps its full set at 15 so the list stays focused, well under that line.
Which hashtags show above the YouTube title?
YouTube can show up to three hashtags by the video title. The Help Center says these are the ones it considers most engaging, so YouTube makes the choice. Putting the three you care about first in the description is the common way to suggest them, which is why this tool lays out the block that way. It is not a documented guarantee.
Are YouTube hashtags the same as tags?
No. Hashtags go in the title or description, start with # and are visible to viewers. Tags are a separate field in YouTube Studio that viewers do not see. To check the tags field, use the YouTube Tag Checker linked below.
Can I use hashtags in a YouTube Shorts title?
Yes. Hashtags can go in the title or the description of any video, including Shorts. A hashtag in the title is part of the 100 character title, so keep it short. The same 60 hashtag rule applies.
Where do the suggestions come from?
From a curated list in this tool of more than 40 niches with about 30 commonly used tags each, plus tags built from your words. There is no search volume data and nothing is fetched. The tool runs entirely in your browser.
